History of Chilean Wines

In the 17th century the wine production reached elevated proportions it was so big that the Spanish crown created strict rules to limit the expansion of vineyards and wine production in the new world, The Spanish crown not only controlled that but at one point prohibited new plantations and established rights fees to keep them in order to protect Spanish wine exports to the new continent.

But finally in 1678 the Spanish Crown lifted most prohibitions but not all leaving Chilean wine makers more exposed to wine production. By the 18th Century Chilean wines began competing with Europeans in international market

The most important time in Chilean wine history is in 1870 when wine growers decided to import vinifera vine stocks from France and other wine regions from Europe to improve the wine quality and production, surprisingly this time was when philloxera began its devastating plagues in Europe and North America, luckily Chile wasn't affected by it, which contributed to continue the growth and expansion of its wine industry.
